Southland coach Brad Mooar is set to join the Crusaders coaching staff next season according to reports.

Mooar is likely to handle the team's defence with Aaron Mauger heading to Leicester Tigers. Tabai Matson, the side's current defence guru, will switch his focus to running the team's attack in place of Mauger, according to Stuff.

The appointment of Mooar would complete the Crusaders' set-up and he has experience at Super Rugby level having been backs coach for the Kings during 2013.

Hailing from Canterbury, Mooar's arrival at the Crusaders might also attract Chiefs fly-half Marty McKenzie to Christchurch according to the same report.

McKenzie faces a battle with Aaron Cruden and his brother Damien for the number ten shirt in Hamilton but would be up against Ben Volavola and Richie Mo'unga at the Crusaders following the departures of Colin Slade, Dan Carter and Tom Taylor.

The Crusaders missed the play-offs for the first time since 2001 this year.
