The Crusaders have landed in Cape Town without captain Kieran Read and Dan Carter ahead of Saturday's clash with the Stormers.

The Crusaders landed in Cape Town on Sunday without captain Kieran Read and fly-half Dan Carter ahead of Saturday's Super Rugby clash with the Stormers at Newlands.

Read was a surprise absentee when the team arrived due to a injured big toe sustained during the massive win against the Kings in Christchurch over the weekend.

He is expected to be out of action for four weeks.

George Whitelock, who scored a hat-trick in the demolition of the Kings, will captain the side in Read's absence and replacement forward Jordan Taufua has been flown out as back-row cover.

Carter, meanwhile, has stayed in New Zealand for the birth of his first child and will also miss the Crusaders' upcoming trips to Durban to the Sharks and Perth to face the Force because he was not prepared to risk being left stranded overseas while his wife, Honor, went into labour.
