Chiefs fly-half and skipper Aaron Cruden faces a six week lay-off after breaking his left thumb for the Waikato-based franchise.
The injury occurred during the Chiefs' pulsating 43-43 draw against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Sunday. At the conclusion of the match, Cruden went to hospital for an x-ray which identified a fracture in the thumb.
The All Blacks pivot misses next week's clash with the Rebels in Hamilton, as well as the Chiefs' showdown with Kiwi rivals the Crusaders, before the two-time defending champions travel to Canberra to take on the Brumbies in a tricky Super Rugby away fixture.
