Chiefs captain Sam Cane has revealed the side's plan against the Highlanders; don't give them the ball.

With their lethal backs like Patrick Osborne, Waisake Naholo and Ben Smith running riot in Super Rugby this year, Cane is fully aware of the threat they all pose going into Saturday's clash.

Cane will lead the side this week in the absence of Liam Messam and hopes to lead by example in a crunch game for both sides in the race for the play-offs.

"We've got to be able to hold onto the pill for long periods of time and build some pressure so that means being physical, being accurate and pretty clinical," Cane told Stuff.

"You try and combine all those things and it's not always easy.

"We can't fall asleep in any areas of the field. We've got to be on our toes."

Chiefs head coach Dave Rennie reiterated the need for his side to take care of the ball at all times.

"We need to be accurate, we need to kick well and look after the pill. They're lethal. Any turnover ball and aimless kicks and they've punished a lot of teams."
