Wallabies scrum-half Nick Phipps believes that coach Michael Cheika is a big motivating factor and manages to get the best out of his players.

Cheika came to the rescue of the national team last year and managed to guide the Wallabies to the World Cup final.

After a week of high intensity training, Phipps told the Canberra Times that competition for selection in the team is heating up.

"Every year there's something going on," said Phipps.

"And that's good for me. Even when you think you are playing well, things happen. It's just important for me to stay focused and the selection decisions will come.

"We've got two blokes here keen for a crack and there is always competition for spots.”

Phipps added that Cheika is always willing to work on players to make sure that they reach their full potential.

"The way our style is, I think it's easy to pick up for players coming into the side. Everyone is in no doubt there will be a few shocks. But in Cheik we trust,” added Phipps.

"He sees potential in players and draws the best out of them. There's a method behind what is going on and he's always happy to give guys an opportunity to show what they're worth.”
