Michael Cheika looks set to become the new Wallabies coach amid reports that he is in final negotiations with the ARU.

Cheika confirmed that he had been offered the role on Monday as talks continued to finalise his contract.

“It’s a pretty humbling experience to be asked to be involved in something like that, but we’ll see what happens,” Cheika told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“There are a few things to be ironed out, obviously the logistics, etc … everything is so close. So we will see how it goes and work it out from there.

“Who wouldn’t be excited in coaching [the Wallabies].”

The Waratahs boss could lead the team on their European tour after Ewen McKenzie resigned after barely a year in charge following Saturday’s heartbreaking loss to New Zealand.

The main subject of the ongoing talks would appear to be about his position with the Waratahs, with some reports claiming that he will continue his role as coach of the Super Rugby champions while also leading the Wallabies.

Australia depart for their European tour on Friday, and the ARU are keen to have their man in place before that flight.
