Wales lock Luke Charteris has backed Australia's move to relax their eligibility rules which allowed them to bring in Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell.

Charteris, who plays his rugby in France for Racing 92, knows his countrymen face a tough task later this year against England, Fiji and Australia.

And he thinks the Wallabies were correct to call in the experienced duo, with fellow veteran George Smith also set to return for the tournament.

"If I was in charge I'd have done the same a long time ago," said lock forward Charteris when speaking to BBC Sport. "They're quality players."

The pool of death has been discussed at great length since the Rugby World Cup draw was made and Charteris admits Wales only have themselves to blame for the situation they find themselves in.

"It will be tough, we knew that when the seeds were made," he added.

"Unfortunately we were ninth in the world and that's the price you pay for it. It'll be tough for us but tough for the other teams as well."
