All Black flanker Liam Messam admits his charges face a "massive test" against the Wallabies as they look to keep their hands on the Bledisloe Cup.

Messam, who didn't feature in the shock 27-19 loss to Australia in Sydney last weekend, could return to the line-up in Auckland and knows they must improve.

"If you look at it that way it's a massive test," he told stuff.co.nz ahead of second and final Bledisloe Cup clash of the year. "[It] means a lot to this team, and we want to keep it. It's an exciting challenge, and you could see that in the way the boys turned up to the gym really excited about starting this week fresh."

He added: "We know what we need to do to fix our problems this week."

Meanwhile, lock Brodie Retallick highlighted the importance of fronting up at Eden Park as they look to bounce back from the Rugby Championship loss.

"It's take it or leave it, pretty much. If we really want to win it we'll see how much it means to us. It's something we want to hold on to, but we'll need to put in maximum effort to try stop it [going]," admitted the hard-working second-row.
