The dramatic overhaul of Europe’s elite tournaments was meant to increase the importance and prestige of the second tier competition.

The early signs are that it has done anything but, with teams from the Top 14 paying even less attention to the Challenge Cup than in previous seasons.

And this is not just with regards to Brive, hammered 55-0 by Gloucester on Thursday, it’s the case pretty much across the board.
