Italy prop Martin Castrogiovanni expressed his frustration at the way his side were dominated at the scrum by France.
Jacques Brunel's side conceded 19 penalties in a heavy 32-10 loss at Twickenham, with Frédéric Michalak punishing them off the kicking tee.
Referencing back to Italy's strong outing in their warm-up match against Wales, Castrogiovanni struggled to understand how the scrum could fall so far.
"Today was quite frustrating because we don't change our scrum. We have had the same scrum for the last 10 years and one week you look good and the next everything goes against you," he said.
"I know the ref is always right but sometimes it is good to know what we need to do.
"I don't understand as a week before against Wales we were so good and the week after… If you told me we'd be destroyed in the scrum, I don't know what to say.
"But when you go forward and get penalised every time you have a scrum, it is frustrating because it takes you out of the game.
"It would be good to know what the ref wants from us because we did nothing different and were penalised anyway."
Italy's next match is against Canada this Saturday.
