The determination and mental strength of new Bath signing Sam Burgess has caught the eye of England head coach Stuart Lancaster.

The determination and mental strength of new Bath signing Sam Burgess has caught the eye of England head coach Stuart Lancaster.

Burgess was presented to the media on Thursday and is set to make his debut in mid-December, although which position that happens in remains unknown.

The NRL title winner with South Sydney Rabbitohs has been tipped to play centre for England, while Bath remain open to using him in the back row.

Burgess faces an intense regime to get up to speed with the intricacies of the sport over the coming weeks, but Lancaster believes that if anyone can make the conversion a success, it’s him.

“He’s got the ability as a player, but also as a leader, I think he’s got great mental strength.” Lancaster told the BBC.

“It’s a great signing for Bath, and hopefully for us further down the line.

“He’s got a lot to do in terms of learning the intricacies of rugby union. But if there’s a man that can do it I think he can.

“What he put himself through in the final – his mindset to deliver and pay back the faith that the Rabbitohs had shown in him set him apart really.

“But he’s in a competitive position and he’ll have to earn the right to get into our [England] team. But if he gets in our squad I’m sure he’ll make an impact.”
