Bath’s star signing Sam Burgess faces an early setback in his Union career, after fracturing a cheekbone in the NRL Final.

Burgess ended his time in the NRL with the South Sydney Rabbitohs as a champion, with the side backed by Russell Crowe winning their first title for 43 years.

The England international suffered his injury within the first minute of the match in a sickening clash with James Graham, but heroically played on and showed huge emotion at the final whistle of the 30-6 victory.

“The doc seems to think I’ll need surgery on my face tomorrow. This cheek, it’s gone inwards,” Burgess told reporters afterwards.

“I’d imagine I’ll be getting it fixed over the next 24 hours. The joy is over-riding the pain at the moment.

“I wasn’t really listening to what he (doctor) was saying to be honest, my teammates really helped me through the process.

“I just had to get on with it I guess … nothing was going to stop me enjoying that ride and that moment with the team tonight.

“We’ve worked for this day from November 1, so there was no chance I was missing out.”

It’s currently unclear when Burgess will be available to make his Bath debut.
