England wing and former rugby league star Chris Ashton believes Sam Burgess will succeed in rugby union when he arrives.

England wing and former rugby league international Chris Ashton believes Sam Burgess will succeed in rugby union when he makes the code switch.

The 27-year-old Saracen, who has performed strongly in both codes, insists settling time in union won't be too much of an issue for Burgess.

“I'm sure he's getting the help he needs now, but he's such a natural rugby player he'll make things happen,” the league convert told tvnz.co.nz.

“He won't take much bedding in time because his size and the threat he poses in league make him a completely different kettle of fish.”

Burgess has been a star for the South Sydney Rabbitohs but has decided to try his hand at union, inking a contract ahead of the World Cup.

And with England currently struggling to settle on an inside centre, his move may be well timed, with Ashton believing he is an outstanding player.

“Sam's an exception. If you watch him play league, he's the best player on the pitch every single time,” he said.

“There aren't many players like that – he's up there with Sonny Bill Williams and people like that.”
