Pierre Spies has revealed that the Bulls were no longer going to keep him after a decade with the Super Rugby side.
The Springbok number eight has now signed for Top 14 side Montpellier to become the latest recruit from Jake White's homeland.
Spies made just shy of 120 appearances for the Bulls in Super Rugby along with 53 Tests for the Springboks, taking plenty of experience with him to France ahead of his new challenge.
Detailing how his move panned out, Spies hailed White as one of the best coaches in the world.
"The Bulls told me that they weren't going to keep me," Spies told Midi Olympique.
"That's when Jake White called me. Having come across him with the Springboks, I know he's world rugby's best leader.
"I said yes immediately."
Spies will be joined at Montpellier by Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, Jacques du Plessis, Nic White and Jesse Mogg among others.
