Brummer's drop goal stuns Sharks

A last-gasp drop goal from Francois Brummer handed the Griquas an unlikely 21-18 Currie Cup victory in Durban on Saturday.

The Sharks showed plenty of enterprise in the opening exchanges, but their ill discipline cost them on several occasions throughout the first half.

Griquas full-back Gouws Prinsloo gratefully accepted every penalty opportunity presented to him, racking up nine points in quick time as the Sharks were pinged for offside play, defensive infringements and holding onto the ball on the ground.

Sharks fly-half Fred Zeilanga added a penalty of his own in the 18th minute, however, and the men in black finally gave the Durban faithful something to smile about seven minutes later as a line-out drive close to the tryline resulted in a five-pointer for prop Lourens Adriaanse.

The tighthead was in control of the ball at the base of the maul and dove over as soon as he spotted the tryline.

The conversion was missed, and the Griquas still led 9-8, which soon stretched to a four-point cushion when Paul Jordaan was pinged for being offside.

Prinsloo had an opportunity to stretch the lead further five minutes from half-time when Odwa Ndungane was penalised for holding on, but he sent his fifth attempt at goal just wide.

Seconds later he was handed a sitter right in front of the posts courtesy of yet another Sharks infringement – this time for a late tackle – to stretch the lead to seven.

The Sharks looked odds on to erase the deficit early in the second half with another drive close to the line after the visitors conceded a penalty and they opted for the line-out, but they were penalised on the front foot and the Griquas escaped unscathed.

Another opportunity arose on the counter-attack a few minutes later, however, and the Sharks ran the ball from their own 22 way up the field. The move came to an end when Griquas winger Ederies Arendse didn't release the player on the ground, and he was sent to the sin-bin for spoiling a potential try-scoring opportunity.

Smelling blood, the Sharks opted for a scrum but their front row was penalised and the Griquas escaped again.

Zeilanga then missed a long-range penalty shot as the scoreline remained 15-8 to the visitors with 20 minutes remaining.

The Sharks were controlling possession and showed no shortage of intent, and the first points of the second half finally came from replacement Lionel Cronje, on for Zeilange, as he slotted a penalty following a Griquas ruck infringement.

That narrowed the deficit to just four points, but Cronje's kick was soon erased by Prinsloo, as the Sharks were pinged right in front at ruck time with 10 minutes remaining.

The pressure on the Griquas finally told in the 76th minute. Scrumhalf Conrad Hoffmann quickly took a free-kick from the base of the scrum and, after a couple of phases, loosehead prop Thomas Du Toit picked up the ball from a scattered ruck, barreled over the advantage line and scored under the posts.

Cronje held his nerve and slotted the easy conversion, leaving the scores tied at 18-18.

That looked to be the ballgame, but the Griquas had one final ace up their sleeve. On the attack in the opposition half as the siren sounded, flyhalf Francois Brummer lined up a drop goal from behind the ruck and coolly slotted it over, handing the Griquas their first win of this year's Currie Cup campaign.

For the Sharks, a highly disappointing loss on home soil that leaves them further adrift of the log leaders.
