Brumbies head coach Stephen Larkham claims the door will always be open should George Smith target a final Super Rugby season.

Smith played an integral role in the franchise's success last season, finishing runners-up to the Chiefs in 2013, and made his international comeback with Australia against the British and Irish Lions.

Now 33, Smith is rumoured to be hanging up his boots at the conclusion of current Japanese side Suntory Sungoliath's season. But the Brumbies would be able to bring him on board for one last campaign.

Larkham can point to back-row riches aplenty, including David Pocock, but admits he'd be open to re-signing his former team-mate.

''We certainly wouldn't rule out signing George,'' Larkham told the Canberra Times.

''We've got a lot of young guys coming through who we're keen to see progress. But if George comes knocking on the door … I doubt he will, but you'd certainly consider it.

''I think we've got enough there. George would give us good coverage. We'll always be open to having George back, but we haven't explored it yet.''
