Brisbane Tens wrap: Day One

Date published: February 11 2017

The Brisbane Tens kicked off on Saturday with Wild Knights, Highlanders and Crusaders the only unbeaten teams.

It was blazing hot in Brisbane, with temperatures rising to a sweltering 38 degrees, but nevertheless it was an incredibly competitive first day of the Tens. The standard was high despite the lack of some high-profile players who were not allowed to take part with Super Rugby on the horizon.

The games provided a fantastic way to get some new signings and recruits into the thick of things. New Crusaders recruit and former Wallaby star Digby Ioane scored for the Crusaders in their 28-0 win over the Reds. Former Chiefs centre Seta Tamanivalu, also scored for his new side in the romp.

It was great news for New Zealand and Hurricane fans as Rugby World Cup 2015 star Nehe Milner-Skudder finally got back onto the paddock after a serious, long-term injury which kept him out Super Rugby last year. The flyer scored a try for his side in their 13-5 loss to the Highlanders.

The only European contingent at the tournament was Toulon, who didn't fare so well considering they lost both of their games. The first loss came in the form of a 10-0 loss to the Brumbies, before suffering a 7-5 defeat to Perth franchise the Western Force. A conversion from Force playmaker Jono Lance being the difference between the two sides.

At the end of the first day, the Wild Knights lead Pool A with six points after winning their two games against the Waratahs and the Rebels. The Crusaders lead Pool B after a close 12-8 win over Samoa and their 28-0 drubbing of the Reds.

The Brumbies lead Pool C ahead of the Highlanders and the Bulls respectively, the former sits in a commanding position considering they still have a game in hand. And the Hurricanes remain at the top of Pool D despite having won only one game.
