Wales scrum-half Mike Phillips is determined to come home from their June trip to South Africa with a series win, saying “it's a great opportunity”.

The 31-year-old, who is expected to tour with Warren Gatland's side, will take on the Boks in Durban and Nelspruit in back-to-back weeks.

And despite their poor finish in this year's Six Nations, Phillips knows a strong performance in the Republic would give them a huge boost.

“It's a great opportunity for us to go down there and get a big scalp,” he told BBC Sport.

“Scotland went down there last year and pushed them very, very close.

“And we've done really well against South Africa.

“We obviously haven't beaten them but we've pushed them all the way.

“Hopefully we can really push on and get a result this year. There's no point going down there otherwise.”

He added to Radio Wales Sport: “It's going to be a massive test for us of course.”

“We were all a little bit disappointed with the Six Nations but it's a chance for us to get back on track and prove people wrong and go down there and get a big result.”
