The Springbok Sevens team have called up one uncapped player, Ruhan Nel, for the Gold Coast Sevens, the opening leg of the World Series.
The tournament will be the Blitzbokke’s first competitive games since winning gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in August and a strong squad has been assembled to start the season on the right foot.
Neil Powell, Blitzbokke coach, told the SA Rugby Union website that the team has stayed grounded and put in hours on the training field.
“We have worked hard in the past few weeks to get into shape for the Gold Coast,” Powell said.
“Our success in Glasgow will obviously bring added expectations, but we will keep our feet on the ground and continue to work hard to make sure we don’t become complacent.”
Lions’ centre Nel is the only uncapped player called up to the team. Joining Nel are regulars Philip Snyman, Stephan Dippenaar and Steven Hunt.
Speedsters Seabelo Senatla and Justin Geduld return to the team after impressive performances in the Currie Cup with Western Province, and flank Kwagga Smith will join the team after the Lions’ Currie Cup match against the Sharks on Friday evening.
Frankie Horne will captain the team in place of regular skipper Kyle Brown, who is still injured.
Werner Kok, Branco du Preez, Cecil Afrika and Chris Dry complete the squad.
