France legend and Biarritz president Serge Blanco has resigned from his role with the club after the failure of a merger with Bayonne.

Blanco required a two-thirds majority during the club's general meeting on Tuesday to push through the proposal, which has gone through various stages of progress and then setbacks over the last few months.

The merger's failure though has resulted in Blanco leaving the club. He is currently vice-president of the FFR, France's national governing body, with many tipping him to make a run for the presidency in 2016.

Biarritz were relegated from the Top 14 at the end of the 2013/2014 season and failed to make the play-offs in the ProD2 this year.

They will be joined in France's second league by Bayonne, whose fans shared concerns over the prospect of the two clubs unifying after the Biarritz board approved the merger last week.

Merger or no merger, both clubs face an uncertain financial future, with Bayonne president Manu Merin telling Rugbyrama: "We need to final a million euros before early July."
