Bergamasco says ‘Arrivederci’ to Italy

Azzurri back-row Mauro Bergamasco said his farewells to Italian rugby after their final match against Romania on Sunday.

Despite not running on the park for the final fixture, the veteran participated in his fifth Rugby World Cup when he came on during the win against Canada.

And Bergamasco has pleaded with the Italian authorities to start preparation for the 2019 World Cup as soon as possible.

"They have to plan, that is the main thing," said the 36-year-old, who played 106 tests for the Azzurri.

"Plan and organise a strategy for the next four years. They need to have an objective, but you also need a strategy to help you reach the World Cup in the best condition possible, and then you can reach your goals."

Italy came away from the pool stage with two wins from their four matches. While Bergamasco was not happy with how they played, he is content with the results.

"I'm happy, even though we didn't meet the high standards we wanted," he added.

"This win is, of course, good as we qualified for the next World Cup, but also to lift spirits and leave us with a smile on our faces. We feel a bit empty now, but we will spend the evening together – my last as a player – and have one last drink with the squad.

"I need work because I have to eat. I will try different things over the next few years and then decide what I want to do."
