Kurtley Beale will be missed by the Waratahs for this Sunday's derby against the Rebels, but they hope to see him return in a fortnight.
Initial fears suggested that Beale could be ruled out for six weeks after dislocating his elbow during training on Tuesday.
However the good news is that Beale should be available for the Waratahs following their bye week next weekend.
“It started off with a worst-case scenario of six weeks,” Gibson told AAP.
“He hurt that elbow ligament, sort of subluxed the elbow joint. Obviously he scanned it right away and typically scans can paint a much worse picture than what it actually is.
“Since then the assessment is it’s actually not too bad. It could be just be just a flare up of an old injury. So it’s far more positive.”
Even though Beale's injury could have been much worse, Waratahs skipper Michael Hooper admitted that losing Beale for Sunday was still a significant setback.
“He’s gutted, absolutely gutted,” said Hooper.
“I didn’t even see the actual incident the other day at training, but you see the effect it has on the group when people start hearing about it in the locker room because you feel for the guy.
“He just wants to play rugby and he’s in really good form.”
