Exeter Chiefs director of rugby Rob Baxter admitted his side were lucky to take anything away from Franklin's Gardens after their loss on New Year's Day.

The Premiership high-flyers suffered an 8-3 defeat away to Northampton Saints, securing a losing bonus point to take back to Devon.

Baxter however felt his side had endured an off day, up against a hungry Saints side looking to bounce back from their defeat to London Irish.

Exeter do however still remain in second place ahead of the rest of the Round 8 Premiership fixtures this weekend.

"I think we stole a point," Baxter said.

"We were a bit off today for whatever reason; we were a little tentative early on in the game and never found one way of getting ourselves in the game.

"Our maul never got going because we didn't catch enough line-out ball, it was tippy-tappy stuff.

"Defensively we looked okay, but overall I am pleased to get a losing bonus point because I can't say that performance merited it."
