Brad Barritt feels he deserves more credit for his role in the England midfield ahead of Saturday’s clash with South Africa.

The Saracens centre started alongside Kyle Eastmond against New Zealand, and is expected to keep his starting spot after being named in the matchday squad to face the Springboks.

That will see him go up against the country of his birth, having started his rugby career in South Africa before moving to England in 2008.

And while he sometimes comes under fire for not offering the gamechanging ability of Eastmond or injured pair Luther Burrell and Manu Tuilagi, Barritt believes his defensive organisation can be just as valuable to the team.

“Reliability is important in the Test arena because it is often about small margins,” said Barritt.

“Having players who bring people together as a linchpin in attack and defence is what you need. I sometimes think that what is said about me is unwarranted, because I try to bring what is needed on the day to win a Test.

“I’m truly integrated into this England team. I’ve been involved since 2009 and it is definitely where I consider home.

“I guess there is an added incentive against the country of your birth but every Test for England is important. You don’t prioritise.

“There are players I have played with in the past and that is always an interesting dynamic … but once you get out on the pitch that goes out the window.”
