The Hurricanes received a boost ahead of Friday's clash with the Highlanders in Napier when first-choice pivot Beauden Barrett was passed fit to play.

The 24-year-old All Black took part in a Hurricanes training session on Tuesday after spending a month on the sidelines with a knee injury sustained against the Crusaders on May 2.

With Barrett set to play, stand-in fly-half Otere Black, who wore the 'Canes number 10 jersey in recent matches against the Blues and Crusaders, will fly out to Italy to join the New Zealand U20 side for the World Rugby U-20 Championships.

After their loss to the Crusaders in Nelson at the weekend, Barrett's return comes at just the right time for the Hurricanes as he is expected to provide an attacking spark on attack against the Highlanders who are on a high after a convincing win against the Chiefs in Invercargill on Saturday.
