Canterbury take Ranfurly Shield from Waikato

Jordie Barrett slotted two penalties in the last 10 minutes to give Canterbury a hard fought 29-23 win over Waikato to take the Ranfurly Shield.

Not since 2010 have Canterbury won the Log o' Wood, and they've not held it since 2011 after their last defence lasted just three matches.

The scores were level at 23-23 after Iliesa Ratuva scored for Waikato in the 66th minute but they conceded two penalties in the space of six minutes as Canterbury extended their lead at the top of the standings.

Jordan Manihera scored early to give the home side a 5-3 lead but the visitors hit back with two tries of their own to take a 20-12 lead into half time.

Jordan Trainor kicked two penalties in the first 10 minutes of the second half to close the gap to two points before Barrett pulled one back with a penalty of his own.

Waikato turned up the heat when Ratuva went over to level the scores but ill discipline towards the end cost them dearly as Canterbury edged ahead thanks to Barrett's accurate boot to claim the Ranfurly Shield.
