Gloucester prop Fraser Balmain has been ruled out until December with a knee injury sustained in the 28-17 defeat to Harlequins at Twickenham Stoop two weeks ago.

Balmain suffered a twisted knee in that game and underwent surgery on Wednesday after which it was confirmed he would be sidelined until just before Christmas.

The 25-year-old had only recently joined the club from Leicester Tigers in the off-season was looking to cement a first-team place.

A Gloucester spokesman said: “Fraser has had surgery to his knee and will be out for up to 12 weeks.”

In addition to Balmain, Ben Morgan is currently sidelined with a calf injury while Gloucester are anxiously awaiting the results of Matt Scott's scan who also limped off against Leicester.

Johan Ackermann, Gloucester head coach, said: “Matt Scott is obviously going to be out for this week and he had a scan yesterday.

“We are waiting for the results from that and hopefully it won’t be a three or four month thing and just a couple of weeks.”
