Former Scotland captain Andy Nicol has expressed his disagreement with Scotland calling up Hugh Blake ahead of the Six Nations.
Blake joined Edinburgh from the Highlanders only in December and is yet to make an appearance for his new club.
The 22-year-old New Zealander has two Scottish grandparents but recently turned out for the New Zealand U20 side before making the move north.
Blake’s selection has caused more consternation given the fact that experienced back-rowers including former captain Kelly Brown and John Barclay have been left out.
“There is something surely wrong when the Scotland squad for the Six Nations is announced and I have never heard of one of the players!” said Nicol on Twitter.
“Can anyone tell me anything about Hugh Blake please? Rest of squad is good but this one baffles me!
“Not played for Edinburgh but picked for Scotland? I thought we had left these days long ago!”
