Oyonnax have confirmed that Olivier Azam will take over as sporting director replacing the departing Christophe Urios.
The current Lyon forwards coach had been tipped to leave the club already this season, with rumours of a difference of opinion with director of rugby Tim Lane.
And with the Oyonnax job becoming available, Azam will get his first shot at a head coaching role, having previously worked as a forwards coach at Toulon.
Azam, the former Gloucester hooker, will have a wide range of responsibilities, looking after the professional and amateur parts of the club as well as the youth set-up.
Lyon President Yann Robert had made Azam an offer to stay with the Top 14 side, but in the end he preferred the opportunity at Oyonnax.
“Olivier’s departure is an opportunity to celebrate the work he’s done at Lyon over the last two seasons,” said Robert.
“We wish him all the best in his new role and are counting on him to reach our goals for this season.”
Azam will replace Urios, the long-time Oyonnax boss, who announced a few weeks ago that he would be joining Castres at the end of the season.
Urios is believed to be taking his coaching staff with him, and as a result Azam is expected to announce his future assistants in the coming weeks.
