The ARU are contributing towards Karmichael Hunt's reported $600,000 per season salary according to boss Bill Pulver.

Hunt will join the Reds next season in Super Rugby, with the ARU assisting in the funding of his salary.

The 27-year-old was announced as a new signing by the Reds this week along with former Wallaby back James O'Connor.

Hunt enjoyed a successful stint with Biarritz, starting in the 2010 Heineken Cup Final defeat to Toulouse.

O'Connor's deal is purely with the Reds given that his ARU contract was cancelled only a year ago, with Pulver admitting there was still work to be done before another similar deal for the Toulon back would be considered.

“I think (Hunt) is a very special player, the sort of player that comes along only every now and again,” Pulver told AAP.

“In the case of James O'Connor it's entirely a Queensland rugby union contract.

“In the case of Karmichael Hunt, we have him on an Australian agreement working in tandem with Queensland Rugby Union.

“We've been in a constant dialogue with (QRU CEO) Jim Carmichael, but it was always absolutely clear that we would not be signing James up to an Australian contract at this point, having severed the relationship not so long ago.

“But everyone deserves a second chance; he's a wonderful player.

“It will be a judgment call based on how things go both on and off the field,” Pulver said.
