Bernard Laporte has revealed that Delon Armitage will move to the wing to accommodate Leigh Halfpenny for high-flying Toulon.

Armitage started the season at full-back with Halfpenny struggling for fitness because of an adductor problem, but since the Welshman’s return a fortnight ago, the former England international has been pushed to the sidelines.

The pair are expected to play together for the first time this weekend though, when the defending champions travel to Ulster for the second game of their Champions Cup campaign.

And it will be Armitage, rather than Halfpenny, who is shifted to the wing, but Laporte insists it won’t be a problem, despite Armitage’s struggles in the position last time he played there.

“We want to get the best out of our players,” Laporte told Rugbyrama.

“At the moment, if you want to be competitive, you need a world class kicker, that’s the case in every team. Leigh showed what he can do against the Scarlets, not that he needed to prove himself.

“So Delon will have to play on the wing from time to time. It’s another solution for us. It doesn’t really matter where he plays, I expect him to be the same player: for him to win his one-on-one battles and to counter attack.

“It’s true that last time he played on the wing it wasn’t necessarily a success. But I’ve spoken to him.

“At the time he felt like he was untouchable at full-back, which was true. But now Leigh is here and has an important role in the team. Delon is a competitor and someone with integrity, it doesn’t bother him to play on the wing.”
