Stade Français' season went from bad to worse on Sunday as they fell to Top 14 play-off hopefuls Montpellier 29-23.

Defeat has left the Paris giants stuck five points behind ninth-placed Bayonne and with a dismal record of eleven defeats in 22 domestic fixtures.

It had all started so promisingly for Julian Dupuy's outfit as the experienced scrum-half kicked them 9-3 up four minutes before the half-hour. And when England flanker James Haskell crossed right on half-time, a 14-9 advantage was theirs.

But Montpol are a proud bunch and, led by pivot Francois Trinh-Duc, they quickly set about turning the screw with Martin Bustos Moyano's boot, a penalty try and a then a five-pointer for tighthead George Jgenti ultimately stunning Stade Français.

The scorers:

For Montpellier:
Tries: Penalty, Jgenti
Con: Bustos Moyano 2
Pen: Bustos Moyano 4, Trinh-Duc

For Stade Français:
Try: Haskell
Pen: Dupuy 3, Beauxis 2
