Americas Wrap: Round Four

Editor

There were Americas Rugby Championship victories for Uruguay, the Argentina XV and the USA as they beat Canada, Brazil and Chile respectively over the weekend.

Uruguay 17-13 Canada

Uruguay defeated Canada for the first time since 2002 when they claimed a 17-13 victory in Maldonado.

The visitors drew first blood when Canadian scrum-half and captain Gordon McRorie kicked a penalty in the fourth minute.

After that Canada could not control the ball due to the wet conditions, but the home side were far more used to it and nabbed two tries in quick succession.

The first came in the 19th minute when winger Leandro Leivas grubbered the ball down field, it looked as though the ball was going to go out, which put the Canadian defence at ease. But the ball stayed in field and Leivas chased and touched down.

The next came when Canada full-back Brock Staller was given a yellow card and just after the visitors were caught trying to pull down Uruguay's maul with referee Derek Summers declaring the penalty try.

Canada got a try of their own, but only in the 75th minute when outside centre Conor Trainor pulled off a bit of individual magic to dance around the Uruguayan cover defence and score between the sticks, but it was too little too late.
