The Highlanders have been handed a big boost with the news that All Black scrum-half Aaron Smith has signed a new two-year contract.

The 25-year-old re-signed with New Zealand rugby a fortnight ago but had not yet confirmed he would be staying with his franchise, sparking rumours of interest from the Blues.

However he has signed a new two-year extension with the Highlanders with general manager Roger Clark insisting Smith never considered a move anywhere else, adding that the scrum-half is seen as a big part of the franchise's future.

“It's great to be able to officially confirm Aaron will be a Highlander for the two years,” Clark said.

“We have made great progress as a team this past season and as a senior player Aaron is vital to the continuation of that success.”

The Highlanders made the Super Rugby play-offs this season for the first time in 12 years, only to go down narrowly away to the Sharks in Durban.
