The Leinster centre has built up an impressive partnership with his Ireland skipper Brian O'Driscoll in the midfield and was one of the stars of Ireland's Grand Slam triumph this year.

He made his international debut in the autumn of 2006 against the Pacific Islanders, having already represented Ireland Schools and Ireland A.

He won a second cap against Argentina in the summer of 2007, and two more as a substitute in the 2008 Six Nations. In the 2008 autumn internationals Fitzgerald started against Canada, New Zealand and Argentina after impressing for Leinster.

With O'Driscoll looking a certainty to start in the midfield for the Lions, Fitzgerald could well get the nod to partner him ahead of more experienced players.

Fitzgerald certainly has the pedigree. His father Des won 34 Ireland caps at prop, a tally which the impressive centre is almost certain to beat if he maintains his present progress.
