After establishing himself as The Tigers' first-choice scrum-half during the 2003-04 season, Ellis made his England debut as a replacement against South Africa in November 2004.

By the following year's Six Nations, he had emerged as England's premier number nine and looked set for a long and distinguished international career.

But his progress has subsequently been derailed by a serious injury and on-field disciplinary problems.

A knee ligament problem suffered in the Guinness Premiership semi-final of 2007 forced him to undergo surgery and miss the World Cup later in the year.

He made slow progress on his comeback but, just as he looked to be rediscovering his previous verve, was handed a six-week ban for a dangerous tackle on Perpignan's Dan Carter during a Heineken Cup tie at the end of 2008.

However, England kept the faith and by the end of the 2009 Six Nations Ellis had usurped Danny Care as team manager Martin Johnson's favoured scrum-half option, earning a trip to South Africa in the process.
