Jonny Wilkinson: Past it?

Former Wales fly-half Jonathan Davies has criticised Jonny Wilkinson, stating that the Toulon number ten "has had his day."

Wilkinson starred for Toulon in the Heineken Cup semi-final victory over Saracens and was contacted by Warren Gatland the day before the Lions squad announcement to tour Australia.

Now 33, Wilkinson has initially ruled himself out of the tour due to his conditioning and commitment to Toulon, but his involvement in the tour's latter stages has not been ruled out.

Davies, however, believes that despite Wilkinson's excellent form and 91 caps, that the Lions tour has come too late for the World Cup winner, whilst also being critical of his game.

"I don't think Wilkinson's game management is that great," said Davies to the BBC.

"Also, he does not bring centres into play. He has had his day and calling him up would be a backward step, but I am surprised the Lions have only taken two outside-halves.

"I do not think Wilkinson would suit the approach the Lions will need.

"Playing Australia involves more than kicking goals and taking three points. They will score tries against us and we have to be able to match that. I do not see Jonny as the man to bring that out in the Tests."
