Canterbury and Otago have never met in an NPC semi-final but Auckland and North Harbour have done so three times.
There were not always semi-finals in the NPC, New Zealand's premier domestic competition. Originally there was just a league system. Semi-finals, and finals, only began in 1992, after 16 years of a league system.
Ever since early in the 20th century, the great competition involving New Zealand's provinces has been the Ranfurly Shield, donated in 1901 by Lord Ranfurly as a challenge trophy. While the National Provincial Championship began in the 1970s, the Ranfurly Shield has remained, the result depending on a one-off match which favours the holders.
