Super 14 - stats, week 1

Tuesday 19th February 2008

Law Change: There was an average of 21 free-kicks per game in the opening round of the Super 14

Law Change: There was an average of 21 free-kicks per game in the opening round of the Super 14

The stats change this year with the partial introduction of the Experimental Law Variations into the Super 14.

We shall later compare Super 14 stats with Six Nations stats as a kind of audit of the ELVs.

There is no doubt that for the ELVs to work players have to change their minds, hearts and souls. Comparing the match in Durban between the kicking Sharks and the Force with the match in Bloemfontein between the running Lions and the Cheetahs would show starkly the difference in possibility.

The weather played a serious part in wet Christchurch when the Crusaders played the Brumbies. And it was hot and sweaty in Durban.

We shall also discuss some interesting incidents later but here we shall give some statistics around possession.

We shall also produce tables which we shall keep running during the Super 14.

'Stoppages' is the total of penalties, free kicks, line-outs, scrums and their infernal resets, and drop-outs.

Sanctionary Cards

There were three cards - for Jamie McIntosh (Highlanders), Ma'a Nonu (Hurricanes) and Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs). There was, which is noteworthy, no yellow card for a tackle infringement, though Wikus van Heerden may have been close. Some players may have been lucky not to be carded - Anthony Tuitavake (Blues), Pedrie Wannenburg (Bulls) and Sireli Naqelevuki ((Stormers).

Nili Latu leads the Islanders to their first ever Test victory. Despite this try from Leonardo Ghiraldini Italy went down 25-17. Kameli Ratuvou's try, to go with two from Vilimoni Delasau was enough to seal the famous win.
