Canada West and US Falcons win

Wednesday 16th July 2008

Canada West and the US Falcons both won their North America Four tournament matches on Tuesday at Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island.

The two teams now play off against each other on Saturday for bragging rights in the tournament.

Canada West won their match against the US Hawks 48-0 in the first of a double header of matches, runnig in eight tries.

Once the West had carved themselves out a 19-0 lead by the 25th minute, the game was up as a contest, with the Americans unable to cope with the running of the Canadians.

Canada West's tries came from fly-half Matt Evans, cente Bryn Keys, number eight Thomas McKeen (2), replacement wing Brock Nicholson, flanker Adam Kleeberger, centre Sam Jenkins, and a penalty try.

Evans converted three of the tries, and wing Ben Grant one other.

The second game of the day was a much closer affair, with the US Falcons coming back from behind to defeat their 'hosts'.

International lock Stu Ault opened the scoring with a converted try for the East side, fly-half Steven Piatek adding to the conversion with a penalty to make it 10-0.

Then wing Jordan Kozina scored on the left to make it 15-0, and all the Falcons could manage before the break was a penalty from wing Zac Pangelinan.

Pangelinan added another after the break, and an intercept try from wing Volney Rouse, with almost his first touch of the game, made the score 15-13 with Pangelinan's conversion.

Discipline in the Canada East ranks frayed, and Pangelinan put his side in the lead with a huge penalty, before Gary Golding ran in a fine try with twelve minutes to go, Pangelinan converting.

He landed another penalty in the final ten miuntes, and although Canada East rallied with a late try from replacement back row Chauncey O'Toole, it was too little too late.
