Lions' Tests in New Zealand

Wednesday 22nd June 2005

A long battle under the Long White Cloud

The Lions, whatever their names, have not had it all that easy when they have met New Zealand in Tests. They have played in 10 series, winning just one, drawing none and losing nine times.

Including the tour by the 1908 team called Anglo-Welsh - and it is fair to do so - the tourists from Britain and Ireland have played 35 Tests in New Zealand. They have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 26.

Their best series was in 1971 when they won the series 2-1 with one drawn.

Shaun Edwards hands out the orders as Wales warm-up at the Millennium Stadium. A sickening clash of heads in the opening minute sees both Stirling Mortlock and Jamie Roberts hurt. Mortlock is taken from the field immediately, whilst Roberts plays on for 15 minutes with a fractured skull.
