Xavier Rush: Out for twelve weeks

Xavier Rush: Out for twelve weeks

Cardiff Blues' season has got off to a bad start, with captain Xavier Rush suffering a knee injury that requires surgery, ruling their talisman out until November.

The 31-year-old, who has torn the cartilage off the back of his knee cap, has been assessed to the extent of the damage and goes into hospital on July 30 to repair the problem.

"I injured the knee in training, however we won't know the full extent of the injury until I see the surgeon on Tuesday," Rush said.

"It's likely that I will need and operation to fix the problem which would put me out for up to twelve weeks which would be disappointing."

And with the Blues eager to build on last season's relative success, the loss will be a dampener ahead of the start of the season.

The Blues have Mark Lewis and Andy Powell available as cover for the number eight jersey.

Shaun Edwards hands out the orders as Wales warm-up at the Millennium Stadium. A sickening clash of heads in the opening minute sees both Stirling Mortlock and Jamie Roberts hurt. Mortlock is taken from the field immediately, whilst Roberts plays on for 15 minutes with a fractured skull.
