As anticipated, the Blue Bulls roared, albeit maybe only briefly, back to the top of the Currie Cup table on Friday with a 69-19 win over the Kavaliers at a near-deserted Loftus Versfeld.
The home side had run in eleven tries by the 55th minute, and eased the foot off the gas in a contest that was embarrassingly lop-sided at times.
Wing John Mametsa and lock Wilhelm Steenkamp both weighed in with a brace of tries, and there were also scores for Morne Steyn, Tiger Mangweni, Marius Delport, Akona Ndungane, Wayne Julies, Burton Francis and Gurthro Steenkamp. Excepting Fourie du Preez, each and every one of the Blue Bulls backs dotted down.
It was 38-0 at the break, and 69-0 with 25 minutes still remaining!
As the Blue Bulls eased off, Boland found time and space to run in three tries of their own, through Elgar Watts, Lionel Cornelius, and Janro van Niekerk. It did at least save a little face, but it was disturbing to think what might have happened had the Blue Bulls kept on going.
