Hard man: Taione will arrive at Quins for next season

Harlequins have announced the signing of Tongan international Epi Taione from Super 14 side the Sharks.

Taione, who is currently serving a six-week ban for a headbutt in the Super 14, has already played in the Guinness Premiership for both Newcastle and Sale.

Known for changing his name during the 2007 Rugby World Cup - in a bid to raise funds for Tonga's cause - Taione has only made two appearances for the Sharks this season. Having been sent off for a headbutt against the Hurricanes he was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.

He will join Harlequins in time for the start of pre-season training, and according to Director of Rugby Dean Richards, will be a welcome addition to the squad.

"Epi is an extremely versatile player, capable of playing at the top level in the forwards, at 6 and 8, and also in the backs, at 11, 13 and 14," said Richards.

"He is an extremely strong and powerful player, and his ability will serve us well. I am looking forward to welcoming him into the squad towards the end of July."
